What’s Next
The state's decisions so far on how to spend Proposition 1B bond money are just the first steps in building a better future for California. We need to make certain the next steps are good ones:
- Local Action - Over the weeks and months ahead, cities will decide what streets to repave and intersections to improve with the $2 billion allocated for local communities.
- International Trade - Regional transportation agencies and the state will keep trucks and freight trains moving with the $2 billion intended to reduce congestion at our booming ports. One in seven California jobs is related to trade and goods movement.
- Buses and Trains - Public transit agencies will start spending $5 billion in bond money to improve and expand public-transit services.
- Federal Focus - The federal government spends more for transportation than it takes in (expenses will outstrip revenue by almost $19 billion between 2006 and 2010). What's more, the federal government is expected to run out of transportation money in 2009. Some options before Congress include increasing the 18.4 cent per gallon federal fuel tax (which was last raised in 1993), pushing for more toll roads, or letting states find their own solutions.
