The Auto Club supported and California voters approved Proposition 1B in November 2006, authorizing $19.9 billion in bonds for a wide range of transportation improvements. So far, the California Transportation Commission (CTC), Caltrans, and other state agencies have made substantial progress in getting the 16 individual programs authorized by the proposition off the ground, but more works remains.
As of the April CTC meeting, out of the total $19.9 billion, over $10 billion has been committed to specific projects, and nearly $2.5 billion has been allocated to the agencies responsible for making the improvements. To date, more than 1,000 highway, transit, local street and road, and bridge seismic-retrofit projects have been approved for funding, with 25 projects already under construction.
The latest step is the allocation of $3 billion for infrastructure improvements to support goods movement. This action included the $2 billion identified in Proposition 1B along with $1 billion of other current and future state and federal funds to support the implementation of 79 improvements to major trade corridors across the state. The CTC also supported strict project guidelines to ensure that these projects are implemented by state, regional, and local agencies as soon as possible.
The Auto Club will be following the delivery of these important projects as well as the ongoing implementation of all of the Proposition 1B programs.
