Good News for Southeast LA and North Orange Counties - I-5 Widening (SR-91 and I-605) Clears Major Hurdle
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved the Final Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) for the construction of highway improvements on Interstate 5 between State Route 91 and Interstate 605 in the cities of Buena Park, Cerritos, Downey, La Mirada, Norwalk, and Santa Fe Springs in Los Angeles County.
This long delayed project will connect with the widening now underway in north Orange County and portions of 1-5 widened in the 1990s. The result will be smoother flowing traffic through this area and continuous carpool lanes from southeast LA County to south Orange County. The Final EIR/EIS identifies Alternative 4B as the Preferred Alternative. Alternative 4B includes freeway widening to 10 lanes (four mixed-flow lanes and one High Occupancy Vehicle lane in each direction).
